14 Million

The EU Digital Identity Wallet is issued by your member state. That's not a flaw, it's the design - the regulation assigns the obligation to each country individually.

Which means the wallet follows your citizenship, not you.

On 1 January 2024, 14 million people living in the EU were citizens of a different EU country. Every one of them has a daily life in one administration and a wallet issued by another.

Cross-border recognition is in the regulation, and it will work. But recognition is not the same as belonging. Recognition means the other country accepts your document. Belonging means you don't have to keep explaining which one you are.

I'm one of the 14 million. German passport, Spanish life, and in January I get a wallet from a country I haven't lived in for nearly 30 years.
