Two questions about the EU Digital Identity Wallet. Neither is technical.

When do you open it?

What for?

When you go to an office? When you open a bank account? When you rent a car?

That's the list. Both questions get the same one.

Notice what's missing from it: today.

Every member state has to ship a wallet by 24 December. Fewer than a third are ready. But readiness isn't the interesting problem.

The interesting problem is what happens on 25 December, when 450 million people have an app on their phone and no reason to open it.

I don't have a complete answer yet. But I'm fairly sure the answer isn't identity.
